The Society administers these sites:

¨ The LeMoyne House, Pennsylvania's first National Historic Landmark of the Underground Railroad;

¨ The LeMoyne Crematory, the first crematory in the western hemisphere;

¨ The Southwestern Pennsylvania Military Museum, an impressive collection of artifacts from each of this country's wars; and

¨ Madeleine's Garden, featuring a restored 19th Century medicinal herb garden located on the LeMoyne House property. The gardens are lovingly cared for by volunteers of the Martha Washington Garden Club.

¨ The Washington County Frontier History Center, currently under construction, this site will include an 18th century settlers fort, settlers cabin, blacksmith shop and a 1780’s log house.

The Society sponsors an annual conference featuring such topics of local and national history as the Whiskey Rebellion, Victorian Washington County, Coal Mining, Ethnic Washington County and the Civil War.

The Society stimulates interest in local history through workshops, on-going living history tours of the LeMoyne House, annual storytelling walking history tours around the City of Washington, an annual history-related Christmas program, a monthly Civil War roundtable, African-American Heritage and Italian-American Heritage Roundtables, and genealogical and historical research facilities and services.

The Society sponsors regular historic displays at the LeMoyne House.

The Society’s education department supplements existing school curricula with local history presentations and provides outreach programs to local groups and organizations.

 A photographic presentation of Main Street, Washington from the mid 19th century through the  present

 

Early Towns of Washington County

 A photographic presentation of historic towns of Washington County, with photographs dating  from the 19th century

 

Dr. John Julius LeMoyne

 A presentation detailing the life of the patriarch of the LeMoyne Family

 

Dr. Francis Julius LeMoyne

 A presentation on noted abolitionist, women’s rights advocate, social reformer, noted physician  and founder of the first crematory in the United States

 

Washington County Frontier Life

 A program detailing the harvest season through winter and 18th century frontier life in  Washington County

 

Frontier Forts of Washington County

 A program focusing on these safe havens from Indian attacks, featuring specific events and  individuals

 

Early Indians of Pennsylvania

 A program featuring famous Indians of Pennsylvania; also including the Delaware’s Catfish  Camp and other Indians of Washington County

 

National Road

 An overview of the “road that built America,” including maps and photos of the first government  subsidized road in the country

 

Underground Railroad

 A program examining the Washington County roots of the American Underground Railroad
