Running of the Wools

For decades, Washington has had strong ties within the agriculture and farming community of the region. So much so that in the 19th century, Washington was the number one exporter of wool in the nation! These connections have been an important part of our history and also have a place in our future. This event is a fun way to showcase our region's wool and farming industry while highlighting downtown Washington's businesses, community partners, and rich history. We hope you can join us as we celebrate the importance of our farming community!

The idea for the Running of the Wools event was born at Liberty Pole Spirits  when Clay Kilgore, Executive Director of the Washington County Historical Society and Sarah Collier, now the Executive Director of the National Road Heritage Corridor, hashed out an outline for the event highlighting the close relationship the city and region has had with the farming and sheep industry.

In just four short years, the Running of the Wools has grown into one of Washington County's most anticipated and celebrated events.  And why wouldn't it?  Nowhere else in American will you find sheep racing down Main Street, cheered on by thousands of enthusiastic spectators.

Spirits in the Garden
Aug. 29, 2026
6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

On August 29, join us for an unforgettable summer evening filled with local history and local spirits, all in the beautiful LeMoyne House gardens.

Your ticket includes a commemorative tasting glass and unlimited tastings from some of Washington County's favorite craft beverage makers, including:

  • Liberty Pole Spirits
  • Burgess & Burgess Distillery
  • Washington Winery & Washington Brewing Company
  • Hangman's Noose Tavern

Full-size drinks will also be available for purchase throughout the evening.

Unlike a traditional tasting event, here every sip tells a story. As you visit the tasting stations, you'll encounter historical interpreters portraying the remarkable people who shaped our region, including Washington’s “First Lady” Madeleine LeMoyne Reed, President George Washington, glass manufacturer and visionary George Duncan, frontier heroine Anne Row Hupp and more!

Whether you're gathering friends for a unique night out or looking for a fresh way to experience local history, Spirits in the Garden offers great drinks, fascinating stories, and an evening to remember.
