Madeleine's garden

In the heart of downtown Washington sits one of the most beautiful sights in Washington County - Madeleine's Garden.  Named in honor of Madeleine LeMoyne Reed, the last surviving child of Dr. Francis LeMoyne and his wife.  It was Madeleine who willed the LeMoyne House and surrounding garden to the Washington County Historical Society.

As a practicing physician, Dr. LeMoyne grew many herbs for his medicinal ingredients.  Today, Madeleine's Garden contains many of the herbs and other plants used to stock 19th Century apothecaries and doctor's offices.  Other parts of the garden are planted simply to be beautiful and contain many of the original flowers planted 200 years ago.

Martha Washington Garden Club members, under the leadership of Grace Mitchell, devote countless hours to tending the garden and keeping it looking lovely for both the casual visitors and the school children who tour it.

Visit the gardens and take advantage of the opportunity to walk through a piece of Washington County History.
